A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is software that changes your IP address and thus encrypts all Internet traffic. This improves data protection, security and helps users bypass censorship on the Internet, for example by government, ISPs or other websites.
Because of this, there are many reasons and benefits to using a VPN. Because the purpose of VPN is to prevent your ISP from seeing which websites you visit on the Internet. When you use a VPN connection, the websites you visit will not see your real IP address or who your ISP is. They only see the IP address of the VPN server, which is usually shared among multiple VPN users to protect each individual user.
So the VPN server acts as a gateway between you and the Internet. It prevents your ISP from seeing what you are on the Internet, and prevents websites from seeing who you are. Your ISP is still needed to connect to the VPN server, but since all traffic passes through the VPN tunnel, the data to the VPN server is encrypted.
